Legionnaires host Chatham in home opener

The Sarnia Legionnaires host the Chatham Maroons Thursday night in their first home game of the GOJHL regular season.

At the season-opening showcase tournament in Pelham last weekend, Sarnia defeated Buffalo 4-2 and lost 4-3 in overtime against Caledonia.

Early on, captain Ben Schoch leads the way with two goals and five points. Ryan Barwitzki, and Brenden Bouvier each have three assists.

Legionnaires Head Coach Derek Di Muzio is hopeful the weekend performance is a sign of things to come.

"We learned a lot about our group on the weekend," said Di Muzio. "We've got a group that really wants to work hard, and we have a group that has a high hockey IQ. It was an excellent weekend."

Sarnia will be without Joe Ferrera, Cameron Ware, and Wil O'Leary-Dilosa for tonight's contest, stemming from the game against Buffalo.

Ferrera was suspended for four games after being called for instigating a fight, Ware was banned for two contests for a head check, and O'Leary-Dilosa one game for unsportsmanlike conduct.

The team recently announced the additions of Jett Morningstar, Tristen Konrad, and Matthew Cunningham.

Morningstar spent last season with Chatham AAA Minor Midget program, while Konrad and Cunningham were members of the Lambton Jr. Sting.

Jon Sanderson isn't returning to the club this year.

He's listed on the roster of the Macomb Stags of the newly formed Interstate Hockey League.
