High hopes for Marinaro and partner at Nationals

Sarnia's most prominent figure skater is set to hit the ice at the Canadian figure skating championships in Saint John, New Brunswick.

Michael Marinaro, alongside partner Kirsten Moore-Towers of St. Catharines, will compete in Friday night's short program. The free skate is scheduled for Saturday.

The pair captured the bronze in the 2018 championship, but they're hoping for a better result this year -- both the gold and silver winning teams have retired or split up.

In November, Marinaro and Moore-Towers finished in fourth place at the NHK Trophy Grand Prix of Figure Skating in Hiroshima, Japan.

Earlier in the year, the pair won the bronze at Skate Canada International event, and in the same month, they took home the silver medal at the Finlandia Trophy figure skating competition in Helsinki.

Marinaro and Moore-Towers finished 11th at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang and finished sixth at the world championships.
