Sting GM confident in team despite trade

The Sarnia Sting's GM believes the team can be competitive for years to come, despite Wednesday's trade of veteran forward Anthony Salinitri.

The team was able to acquire a pair of second round picks and a fourth in the deal with Oshawa.

The trade restocks the draft cupboard after high picks were used to obtain the likes of Travis Konecny, Cam Dineen, Michael Pezzetta and Jonathan Ang.

Nick Sinclair said they don't want to make any moves that will put the club in a bad position.

"We've always said through my time here that we never want the organization to be in a place where we're going through a complete rebuild, looking at two or three years down the road to get back on our feet," said Sinclair. "We'll continue to address things and look at things as they come in and just kind of see what happens here in the coming months."

Sinclair said he believes the deal will be good for the development of younger players, with the chance for more ice time.

He admitted the number of goals against is a concern, the Sting have given up the second most in the league at 112.

"It's obviously not a stat that we want to have right now, it's something that we need to work on and improve as soon as possible here," said Sinclair "That's an effort that needs to come from all areas of our group."

He said there's been a lot of discussion between rival GMs as the OHL trade deadline approaches in January but nothing concrete.

"Do I expect some things to happen here as we get closer to the trade deadline? You never know," said Sinclair. "There's a lot of discussions right now and things seem to be a lot busier on the phone lines than they were maybe a month ago. We feel we've still got a good team here this year. We're obviously a bit younger, but we've got a good group and a team that can make some noise as we push to the second half of the season and into the playoffs."

After Thursday's game in Saginaw, the Sting will host the Flint Firebirds on Friday night before heading to London to battle the red-hot Knights on Sunday afternoon.
