Lifejacket credited for successful rescue in Lake Huron

Lambton OPP are crediting the use of a lifejacket for saving a swimmer near Pinery Provincial Park over the weekend.

Police were contacted about a swimmer who had entered the water of Lake Huron, drifted from shore, and could no longer be seen at around 5 p.m. Saturday, June 3.

Officers launched a search in Lake Huron and were assisted by volunteer fire departments, the Joint Rescue Coordination Center (JRCC) and the Canadian and United States Coast Guards.

A broadcast was also aired over marine radio, which led to the swimmer being located by individuals on personal watercraft. The swimmer was was then taken to shore.

Police said the situation was brought to a successful conclusion because the individual was wearing an appropriately sized lifejacket and members of the marine community were willing to help someone in need.

Lambton OPP said it's a good idea to make sure you and your loved ones are wearing a properly fitted lifejacket if you are planning to enjoy area beaches this summer.

Police said the weather can change quickly, shifting the wind, and making a return to shore difficult.

More information on lifejackets can be found on the Transport Canada website.
