Unclear if Suncor layoffs will impact Sarnia-Lambton jobs

Suncor Energy Inc. said it will cut 1,500 jobs by the end of this year. However, it's not known if those layoffs will impact operations at its Sarnia-Lambton facilities.

On Thursday, the Calgary-based energy company announced the cuts are being made in an effort to reduce costs and improve the company's financial performance.

Suncor operates an 85,000-barrel-per-day oil refinery in Sarnia which generates gasoline, kerosene, jet and diesel fuels. It also has an ethanol plant in St. Clair Township, which produces 400 million litres of ethanol per year that is blended into Petro‑Canada gasoline.

It is not yet clear if the cutbacks will impact the company's operations in Sarnia-Lambton.

“Suncor is always looking for opportunities to drive value and improve performance in our business, cost reduction is one of those opportunities. At this time we’re not providing additional details,” Suncor spokesperson Sneh Seetal told SarniaNewsToday.ca.

Suncor employees were notified about the cuts in a companywide email early Thursday afternoon. The company employs people across the country, the United States and the United Kingdom with its corporate headquarters in Calgary.
