Hundreds pre-register for Sarnia Walk for Alzheimer’s

Residents will walk around Sarnia's waterfront on Sunday for the annual IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s.

Alzheimer Society of Sarnia-Lambton Manager of Fund Development and Communications Marie Marcy-Smids said about 300 people pre-registered online but more people will likely register on the day of the event.

Check-in will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Suncor Agora at Centennial Park and the walk itself will begin at 9 a.m.

A $10 breakfast of pancakes, sausages, orange juice, and Starbucks coffee will be offered after the walk. Prizes will be awarded and kids' activities will also be set up afterward.

Last year was the first in-person walk to be held in Sarnia after a hiatus caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. About 200 people participated in the 2022 event and a total of $55,650 was raised.

All of the money raised supports families in Sarnia-Lambton through programs and services.

Marcy-Smids said about 3,000 people in Sarnia-Lambton have been diagnosed with Alzheimer's and other dementias but the disease affects roughly 6,000 family members and care providers as well.

Meanwhile, the first Walk for Alzheimer’s in Petrolia was held on May 13 and it exceeded expectations.

"Black Gold Brewery was an awesome venue to hold it at, they were just so accommodating," Marcy-Smids said. "We ended up with close to 100 people and they raised $9,000! I targeted $5,000 for our first walk and we went well over that."

Marcy-Smids also said others who witnessed the walk in Petrolia had committed to participating next year.
