Tutors deployed to area schools

Post-secondary students will soon travel to schools across Lambton-Kent to tutor children one-on-one in math and literacy.

The St. Clair Catholic District School Board [SCCDSB] said it has hired 29 post-secondary students as tutors and they will be deployed to 17 schools across the district.

The tutoring program, funded by the Ministry of Education, is now in its second year.

“Tutoring offers these young adults an opportunity to gain valuable experience in a school setting, which will help them to discern their own future pathway,” said Superintendent of Education Laura Callaghan in a statement. “Many of them are headed for, or are already in, Faculty of Education programs at university, so this is a tremendous opportunity for them.”

The new SCCDSB tutors began a two-day training period on May 1 and will be in schools until June 22.

In the Lambton Kent District School Board, Superintendent of Education Ben Hazzard said they supported approximately 5,400 students with 35 teachers and community partners from April 2022 - March 2023.

"The reading and math support has focused on students in the primary grades and Grade 6," said Hazzard. "The support continues and summer learning activities will support students at sites in Sarnia and Chatham."

Hazzard didn't detail how many tutors have been hired this spring.
