Missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls remembered

Friday, May 5 is Red Dress Day

The national day of awareness is in recognition of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people.

The annual initiative started 13 years ago as "an aesthetic response" to artist Jamie Black's Red Dress Project, which has been exhibited at more than 30 locations across the country.

According to a National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, Indigenous women and girls are 12 times more likely to be murdered or missing than non-Indigenous women.

Residents are encouraged to wear red in recognition of Red Dress Day and share pictures on social media. To show its support, Ontario Provincial Police posted a video on twitter.
