Campaign for Port Lambton rail crossing removal gets county support

The Mayor of St. Clair Township is hoping support from his colleagues in Wyoming will help his fight to have an inactive rail crossing in Port Lambton removed.

Jeff Agar said the lighted CSX crossing at the intersection of Broadway and McDonald Streets remains in place despite the removal of adjoining tracks between French and Holt Lines.

"It's been inactive for a really long time," said Agar. "St. Clair staff have tried to get CSX to come down and null and void it and take it right out because it causes a lot of issues."

The main inconvenience, Agar said, is for school buses which are required to stop at the crossing under the Highway Traffic Act.

"There's been a lot of complaints," he said. "From what I've heard from people who live down there, you might get six [buses] piled up there in the morning. It's just crazy because that's a busy spot along Lambton Line [Broadway Street] there and I wouldn't want to be myself [stuck] in [the wait]."

On Wednesday, Lambton County Council agreed to support St. Clair Township's proposed removal and discontinuance of the inactive railway and railway signal lights at the crossing.

Sarnia News Today reached out to CSX for comment, and has yet to hear back.
