New Seniors Advisory Committee launched in Lambton

A new Seniors Advisory Committee has been launched to advocate on behalf of Lambton County seniors.

Lambton Public Health Supervisor of Health Promotion Anita Trusler said the group held its inaugural meeting in February.

"The Seniors Advisory Committee has been a long time coming," said Trusler. "The recommendation went before council just before the pandemic hit, and of course as we know all things went on hold."

Trusler said the committee will look at policies and opportunities around health system planning, official plans and outdoor spaces.

"The committee is made up of one county council member and representatives from each municipality under the County of Lambton. Those are senior representatives and most of them are community members who have some great experience around issues related to health, municipal planning and things like that."

Trusler, who is acting as a staff support person, said they're also investigating ways to include Indigenous representation.

"Two of the top priority needs that were identified were transportation -- and most specifically for those living in some of our more rural municipalities -- and of course access to healthcare. Healthcare and in-home support for people who want to age in place at home for as long as they can."

Trusler said there will be good opportunities to connect the committee to other work happening in the community.

"You may have heard of Age Friendly Sarnia-Lambton, in terms of helping to support people trying to find access to services and support in the community."
