Charges laid after police pursuit

A 42-year-old Lambton Shores man accused of stealing a pickup truck has also been charged with drug possession, after officers seized a baggie of suspected crystal methamphetamine Wednesday morning.

Sarnia police said the accused allegedly entered someone's garage at around 6:30 a.m. and used a device to start a pickup truck. The incident was reported on Lakeshore Road between Blackwell Sideroad and Telfer Road.

The homeowner arrived at the residence to find the truck travelling eastbound on Lakeshore Road. The homeowner followed the suspect and called police, who found the stolen vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed in the area of Airport Road and Highway 402.

Police said the suspect nearly caused a collision as the vehicle made its way to London Line and ran red lights.

The stolen pickup truck stopped after it hit a curb. Officers said the driver tried to run away from police but was eventually taken into custody.

As a result, he was charged with possession of a Schedule I Substance, theft of a motor vehicle, dangerous operation, possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, and failure to remain.

He was held for a bail hearing and remains in police custody.
