City staff are excited about upcoming improvements at Harry Turnbull Park, which includes a playground and challenge course.
Project details were released in a non-agenda council report last week.
Parks and Recreation Manager Krissy Glavin said improvements to the park space have been long awaited for.
"There's been some focus on this park for the last few years, just trying to add some infrastructure to the park space, clean it up a bit, and get a little more activity available in that park space," she said.
A concept for the playground was chosen after the city retained Park N Play to review the area and come up with options.
Glavin said they hope to have the playground and challenge course installed before the end of 2023.
"We are just waiting for -- essentially an installation schedule from Park N Play, who will be installing this for us," said Glavin.
Once the schedule is given to the city, Glavin said residents will be advised of the construction timeline.
The city received $100,000 from the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program in 2021, and additional capital dollars were later allocated to the park improvement project in 2021 and 2022.
In the meantime, during Monday's council meeting, Sarnia councillors unanimously approved a tender submitted by Park N Play to upgrade five other parks in 2023.
Staff recommended that council accept a $359,825 tender for the community playground improvement projects, as part of a 10-year capital plan to upgrade park equipment.
The five spaces specified in the report include Cardiff Park, Lansdowne Park, Agincourt Park, Retlaw Park, and Newton Park.
The cost for playground enhancements at most of the parks ranges at around $50,000, however, playground construction at Newton Park is expected to cost $152,640.
Earlier this year, the city received a donation of $50,000 to bolster the $300,000 capital to support the replacement of playground equipment.
As specified in the council report, the total cost of the project is fully funded after about $10,000 carried over from the 2022 capital allocations from the playground equipment program.
