Di Muzio steps down from role as Legionnaires coach

After a disappointing 2022-2023 GOJHL hockey season, Derek Di Muzio has resigned as head coach of the Sarnia Legionnaires.

Speaking with Sarnia News Today, Di Muzio said it was time to move on.

"I really appreciate the opportunity the Sarnia Legionnaires hockey club gave me to coach," said Di Muzio. "I'm very grateful for that opportunity, and I want to continue to work with local hockey talent in some capacity. I look forward to pursuing other opportunities with another organization that's fully supportive of my talents."

Di Muzio was an assistant coach with the Legionnaires from 2008 to 2010 before returning in the 2016-2017 campaign where he served as an assistant before becoming head coach in 2018-2019.

In a Facebook post, the team thanked Di Muzio for his time and dedication to the hockey club.

"Complete commitment is an understatement to describe Derek’s role as he unconditionally supported his team on and off the ice," read the post. "We know that whatever lies ahead for Derek, he will do the task with assiduity."

Assistant Coach Darren Rogers, Assistant Goalie Coach Steve Bryce and Support Staff Chris Guthrie also tendered their resignations.

The Legionnaires finished in eighth place in the nine team Western Conference before being eliminated by the top-seeded Leamington Flyers in four playoff games.
