Traffic stops turn up suspected fentanyl

Lambton OPP say several drugs have been seized over the past month after members of the Walpole Island Police Service conducted traffic stops as part of different investigations.

In one case, a 58-year-old man from Walpole Island First Nation was arrested twice within a three-day span.

OPP said Walpole Island police officers stopped a vehicle with stolen plates on Tecumseh Road on March 3. Officers seized suspected fentanyl from the vehicle.

The driver was charged with possession of a schedule one substance for the purpose of trafficking and possession of property obtained by crime - under $5,000.

He was released from custody with a future court date but was arrested again on March 6.

A vehicle without plates was stopped on River Road. The driver allegedly fled to a nearby residence before being taken into custody.

During a search, officers seized a loaded firearm and suspected fentanyl.

The accused, Richard Hinojosa, was additionally charged with the following:

- Unauthorized possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm

- Possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition

- Possession of a firearm knowing serial number has been tampered with

- Resisting a peace officer

- Obstructing a peace officer

- Flight from a peace officer

- Failure to comply with an undertaking (two counts)

- Possession of a schedule one substance (two counts)

- Multiple Highway Traffic Act, Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act and Off-Road Vehicles Act offences

Police said he was remanded into custody following a bail hearing.

As part of a separate investigation, Lambton OPP also said drugs such as suspected cocaine, fentanyl, and methamphetamine were seized during a traffic stop on Delcies Lane on February 6.

OPP said the driver, who was known to police, allegedly took off running but was arrested after a brief chase.

During a search of the vehicle, police seized an unspecified amount of drugs.

A 51-year-old Walpole Island man was charged with 16 offences.

Randy Nahdee was charged with five counts of possession of a schedule one substance for the purpose of trafficking, nine counts of failure to comply with a release order, possession of an item for use in trafficking a substance, and obstructing a peace officer.

The accused was remanded in custody following a bail hearing.

Charges against the accused have not been proven in court.
