Women celebrated through series of local programs

Several community events will be held over the next two weeks in celebration of International Women's Day, which is on March 8.

Lambton County Library will begin holding a series of events beginning Wednesday, March 1, at the Sarnia Library Theatre.

"Voices of Lambton - Women in Business" will feature four local women who will discuss their careers and the adversities they have overcome.

For a 15-minute period before and after Wednesday's event, the Famous 5 Maquette will be put on display at the theatre as part of its Canada-wide tour.

The sculpture is a two-foot-tall replica of the "Women are Persons" original monuments at Calgary's Olympic Plaza and in front of the Senate of Canada in Ottawa.

The Albertan women depicted are trailblazers when it comes to women's rights in Canada; they included Nellie McClung, Emily Murphy, Louise McKinney, Irene Parlby, and Henrietta (Muir) Edwards.

The Famous 5 Maquette will also be at the theatre for two other Lambton County Library events, held on March 6 and March 15.

Community Engagement and Communications Supervisor for the Cultural Services Division Stacey Lapp said Lambton County Library celebrates International Women's Day through its programming every year.

"It's incredibly important that we celebrate the impact that women have had on Lambton County in the past, as well as currently and how that's going to impact us going forward."

Other events organized by Lambton County Library include a presentation about women in history on March 6, a discussion about women's institutes on March 9, a teen DIY craft on March 9, and a moderated panel discussion involving community-driven women on March 15.

Details about the planned events can be found by clicking here.

Registration is required in order to attend any of the library's free International Women's Day events. Residents can register online or by calling a local library branch.

Meanwhile, the Sarnia-Lambton Chamber of Commerce is hosting an International Women's Day event at the Sarnia Library Theatre on March 8, where the Famous 5 Maquette will also be on display.

Invited guests will hear from various speakers including CEO of the Famous Five Foundation Frances Wright, Founder of Future Black Female Dr. Tapo Chimbganda, Founder and CEO of Bridges Global Elizabeth Soltis, and winner of the Stockholm Junior Water Prize Annabelle Rayson.

Money raised through the chamber of commerce's event will go to the Women's Interval Home and Circles.
