Sting fall to Greyhounds 7-3

The Sarnia Sting allowed five unanswered goals in a 7-3 loss in Sault Ste. Marie Sunday afternoon.

Sarnia's Easton Wainwright, Lukas Fischer and Christian Kyrou scored in the loss, and Sting goaltender Ben Gaudreau allowed seven goals on 29 shots.

The Greyhounds opened the scoring at 3:08 of the first period with a goal from Caleb Van De Ven, his first in the OHL. Wainwright and Fischer scored at 6:38 and 7:19 of the opening frame to give the Sting a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes.

The Soo's Kalvyn Watson made it 2-2 at 4:28 of the second, his 26th goal of the year. Kyrou restored the Sting's one-goal lead at 8:12, his 14th goal of the season. About 30 seconds later, the Greyhounds scored their first of five straight goals. The Soo capped-off the second period with goals at 10:22 and 13:50 to take a 5-3 lead into the third period.

The Greyhounds kept their foot on the gas pedal to open the final frame, scoring goals at 2:11 and 4:05. Soo netminder Charlie Schenkel turned away 25 shots in the game including 13 straight after Sarnia took a 3-2 lead in the second.

The Sting have now dropped three of their past four games after winning six straight.

Sarnia is back in action Wednesday night when the hockey club hosts the Guelph Storm. Coverage on CHOK (103.9FM/1070 AM) begins at 6:30 p.m.
