Fire safety event highlights importance of working smoke alarms

Local firefighters want to make sure everyone has working smoke alarms and fire extinguishers in the home in case of a blaze.

This follows a high number of fire related deaths in Ontario in 2022.

Petrolia and North Enniskillen Fire Prevention Officer Darren Allan said there were 133 fatalities province-wide last year.

He said they're teaming up with Petrolia Home Hardware to hold a fire safety event on Saturday.

"We're going to have some of our public educators there to talk with people and explain the types of smoke detectors they can have in their homes," said Allan. "It's important to maintain them. We'll be talking about how to maintain them and check the batteries."

Allan said smoke alarms should be replaced every ten years, and the batteries should be changed twice a year.

He said all fire safety related items will be on sale for 20 per cent off.

There's also a chance to meet Sparky the fire dog, and try out the on site fire extinguisher simulator.

Saturday's event is taking place from 8:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. at Petrolia Home Hardware, located at 4120 Petrolia Line.
