Local industry leaders to sit down with Canada's natural resources minister

Canada's Natural Resources Minister is making a stop in Sarnia today.

Mayor Mike Bradley said Johnathan Wilkinson will be getting a first hand look of the work happening at Western Sarnia-Lambton Research Park.

He said they started planning this visit late last year.

"It's a bit of a secret across Canada that Sarnia is a leader on looking at the new economy, looking at green tech, looking at all the other things coming from the climate change debate," said Bradley. "And, when he announced last year this 'Just Transition' program, that alerted myself and others here to say you need to know what we're doing here. Developing the hydro hub, doing all these other things especially through the research park and the college, to make Canada much better as it relates to climate change and the environment."

Bradley said community industry leaders, including individuals with Origin Materials, Lambton College and the Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership will speak and offer presentations to the minister.

"This is not the Sarnia-Lambton I think that Ottawa and Queen's Park believes exists," he said. "We are further ahead than many communities on moving forward on climate change, and being part of that 'Just Transition'. But, it's got to be a fair transition, it's got to be a transition that's based on science and based on doability, that's the key. So, to have this opportunity to have a leading minister come to this community, I think is extremely important."

The federal government's Just Transition bill, also known as the Sustainable Jobs bill, has yet to be tabled in the House of Commons.

It's geared toward helping the province's transition workers into jobs that support a more sustainable economy.
