Libraries collecting Valentine's Day cards for seniors

Lambton County Library is working with its patrons to help show Sarnia-Lambton seniors they are loved this Valentine's Day.

Adult Programs and Outreach, Public Services Coordinator Andrea Basra said everyone who visits a branch this month is invited to write a valentine.

"This initiative started in 2019 as a partnership with the library, Lambton Public Health and an initiative that Lambton Public Health had put together called Community That Cares," said Basra.

The program was so well received, the library decided to keep it going after the grant ended.

Basra said the valentines are delivered to residents at the three long-term care homes run by the county.

"I have received phone calls from staff at the long term care facilities, emails from staff, and some hand written letters from residents themselves. They're really, really, happy. Just overjoyed that someone is thinking of them and has taken the time to write a poem, write a little message. We get some really creative valentines."

Basra said 700 valentines, 200 more than last year, are available.

"Each of the branches, our 25 locations, have valentines that anyone can go in and fill out and write a little message or whatever they would like."

Basra said you can even add a personal touch.

"Some people have brought in copies of poems that they've included in the valentines. We've [also] had some Brownies [now known as Embers] and Girl Guides groups drop off a bunch of their own homemade valentines, which were wonderful."

The valentines are being collected until Tuesday, January 31.
