OFM concludes investigation into Fairwinds Lodge fire

A large fire at a retirement home in Sarnia has been deemed accidental.

On Wednesday, the Ontario Fire Marshal Fire Investigations Services said it has finished its onsite investigation into the blaze that broke out at Fairwinds Lodge Sunday night, and determined the fire was not suspicious in nature.

"The fire is classified as “accidental”, while the OFM is still considering two separate ignition sources," read a statement from the Sarnia Fire Rescue Services.

It took close to 75 firefighters and support from Point Edward, St. Clair Township and Port Huron, to get the blaze at the home located at Michigan Avenue extinguished.

The 120 residents of the home have been displaced as a result, and were transported by Sarnia Transit to a temporary shelter at Lambton College. Majority of the residents have been relocated with family members.

Damage from the fire is estimated to be somewhere in the millions of dollars range.

Sarnia fire officials say they would like to once again thank all agencies who assisted.
