Sarnia council briefs

Sarnia council has agreed to provide development charges relief to the owners of a self storage building at 720 Devine Street.

The request for just over $14,000 in relief -- associated with the construction of a non-residential building -- was approved, despite staff saying it didn't qualify for the exemption and recommending it be denied.

Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley said the operators have had a "tortured history" with the city and he believes in "fairness."

"I just look at enough things that have happened here, right or wrong... I'm not faulting staff, just things [that] didn't happen or should have happened," Bradley said. "So, I'm willing to support the motion on a one-off basis, only because I don't think the path has been very clear from the city's point of view."
