Sarnia car company donates $100K towards shelter expansion

A Sarnia homeless shelter says a generous $100,000 donation will help open the doors of a new 40-bed shelter expansion.

Progressive Auto Sales recently made the large contribution to River City Vineyard.

Pastor George Esser said the donation was quite a surprise and it will make a big impact.

"Well we hopefully can get our expansion done now by -- we're going to try for March 31. So we have enough money now that we can probably finish that," he said. "We were starting to run tight with funds, so yeah, we were slowing down a bit but now we can speed up again."

Last month, the shelter said it was hopeful for a “slow opening” soon. Fundraising for the project began about four years ago.

Esser said it's not the first time the centre has received such a large donation.

"We have received one other one like this before, just an individual who gave us $200,000 worth of stocks."

Esser added that there's quite the demand for service at the shelter.

"We're very, very, very busy. We've had lots of donations with food and with clothes and that, so we're doing well with that now, it's just very busy."

River City Vineyard previously said that once the expansion is finished, the women’s side will likely open first and more beds will open later on as staff and finances permit.
