Humane society 'overwhelmed' by community support during holidays

The local humane society hopes to continue a social media initiative in the future after a successful holiday season generated a lot of support for animals.

The Sarnia & District Humane Society teamed up with the Sarnia Professional Firefighters Association to host the "24 Days of Rescue" where animals in need of a home were highlighted and fire safety tips were shared over social media.

Operations Manager Nicole King said the humane society participated in similar initiatives with Bluewater Power and Marcotte Disposal.

"We had an absolute blast with it!"

King said December was "a very busy month."

"We had lots of great adoptions," she said. "We did hear some chatting about seeing some of the animals on social media."

In November, the shelter reached capacity and had to temporarily stop accepting surrendered animals.

The increased social media presence during the month of December also brought in a lot of donations. King said they were "overwhelmed" with the community support.

"We had so many donations this year! We had donations of some much-needed items, lots of towels, blankets, and laundry soap. We had so much pet food donated, toys, litter... it was great to see!"

King said it would be nice to see this social media campaign next December or even during the summer months.

"We love people coming in and trying to promote our animals on social media," King said.
