Final large structures at LGS come crashing down

The landscape has forever changed at the former Lambton Generating Station in Courtright.

The final two large structures have been pulled down.

Ontario Power Generation [OPG] spokesman Neal Kelly said the Unit # 3 absorber was brought down in October and the final absorber came down last month.

"The mechanical demolition of Unit #4 absorber was safely and successfully executed on November the 25," said Kelly. "It came down as expected and everything went well."

He said a "handful" of smaller structures are still on the site.

"They'll all be removed by the end of 2022 and then we anticipate that the debris removal will continue into the first quarter of next year, 2023."

Once that is complete, Kelly said the contractor will begin its demobilization from the site.

"It just depends on how it goes and how quickly they get everything off the site."

"The Lambton site in St. Clair Township is a very valuable site. It's been an OPG site for more than 50 years and we've had a lot of employees over the years that worked there, and many still live in that area. So, we'll continue to own the site and we'll look at some opportunities for it."

As for what those opportunities will be, Kelly said they've yet to be identified.

"It is an industrial site. It's very valuable. We have a very good relationship with the community, neighbours, with the elected officials, Indigenous community and we'll keep it that way."
