Festive activities to be held at Canatara Park

Thousands of people are expected to attend the 48th annual Christmas on the Farm event at Canatara Park this weekend.

The festive event, held in partnership with the Seaway Kiwanis Club, will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday and from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday.

"We will have a series of holiday-themed activities, some of which are old favourites from our classic in-person event and some are new traditions that we're bringing forward this year," said Community Services Coordinator Rachel Veilleux.

Altered versions of the event were held the past two years. Last year's format earned the city an Achievement Award from Festivals and Events Ontario.

Veilleux said in past years, the event has seen approximately 5,000 attendees.

"We certainly hope for at least that kind of a turnout, given our past experiences with Easter in the Park and our recent Fright Night event, we've seen a great increase in attendance and do anticipate that that may happen again," Veilleux said.

It's a free event so the only thing guests will need to bring is warm clothing.

"We'll have lots of different activities from chestnut roasting, ice carving demonstrations, we'll be giving out holiday-themed cookies, you can go for a train ride, or you can visit Mrs. Claus herself for some story times, there's lots going on!"

As a note to drivers, Cathcart Boulevard, west of Lake Chipican Drive, will close at 3 p.m. on Friday for the event. Parking will be available at the beach parking lot and around the open field.
