Salvation Army accepting applications for Christmas hamper program

It's welcome news for local families that need some extra help this holiday season.

Sarnia's Salvation Army will soon be accepting applications for its annual Christmas hamper campaign.

Last year, the organization supported over 700 local families with toys and food. It's expected the need will be even greater this year because of the influx in people using the food bank.

Lieutenant Brad Webster said applicants are asked to bring an income statement, ID for everyone in the household and proof of address.

"If you're trying to decide whether to put food on the table, or supply Christmas for your family, that's who the program is geared toward," said Webster. "There really isn't any qualification for it, we just want to be there to help support a family who is in need. If you have a child who is 17 or under, we do our best to supply a toy bag for them, and it comes with a food hamper, so you have the choice. Whichever one you need help with, we can help you, whether it be toys or food."

Webster said they couldn't do the campaign without support from the community.

"All of the donations that we receive from the community throughout the year, especially at Christmas time which ties into our red kettles, is used to support programs here in the community. One of the biggest costs that we have each year, next to our food bank, is the Christmas hamper program."

Those in need can apply by visiting the Salvation Army office at 970 Confederation Street.

Applications are being accepted November 15 to 18, November 22 to 25, and November 29 to December 2 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Distribution will take place the third week of December.
