Gladu named Shadow Minister of Civil Liberties

Sarnia-Lambton's MP is being tasked with helping to protect the rights and freedoms of Canadians.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has named Marilyn Gladu the Shadow Minister of Civil Liberties.

She claims the COVID-19 pandemic brought serious restrictions on Canadians’ freedoms, including limitations on freedom of movement and limitations associated with mandatory vaccines.

"Many of the things that we were asking for, the removal of the PCR tests, and getting rid of ArriveCan have happened," said Gladu. "We're starting to return to pre-pandemic normal. I think there are a number of cases before the court, and some investigations into what went on during the pandemic. That will inform how we make sure that we do a better job going forward."

Gladu said she wants to assist Canada in becoming the "freest country in the world," by maintaining digital privacy, providing reasonable accommodations for the unvaccinated, and avoiding a return to restrictions.

"One of Pierre's key messages in his leadership race was making Canada the freest nation on earth," she said. "We want to stand for freedom of speech, freedom of religion and free market. I think that freedom message is closely tied in with this portfolio."

Gladu said there are concerns around federal bills C-11 (the online streaming act), and C-18 (a bill that would make online platforms like Google compensate media organizations for reusing their journalism).

Gladu previously held the position of Associate Shadow Minister for International Trade and Supply Chains.
