OPP issue warning to dangerous drivers

Lambton OPP is warning dangerous drivers to keep racing on the track.

Cst. Jamie Bydeley said recent events in other Ontario communities have resulted in numerous illegal acts.

"Mischief, dangerous driving, impaired driving, disturbing the peace, break and enter and a multitude of highway traffic act offences," Bydeley tells Sarnia News Today. "These acts can result in arrest, criminal or traffic charges, court dates, fines, licence suspensions and vehicle impoundments."

He said that's why provincial police are encouraging automotive enthusiasts to enjoy their hobby, but also warning of the consequences of participating in unsanctioned car rally activities.

"Lambton OPP recognizes the negative impact that these unlawful events have on our communities and are, therefore, prepared to deploy resources swiftly and effectively to deal with such drivers if they attend any of our communities."

Huron OPP warned of the possibility of an illegal car rally in Goderich last weekend, after numerous criminal and traffic-related charges were laid at an unauthorized event in Wasaga Beach recently.

Bydeley doesn't think an event materialized in Goderich and said Lambton OPP aren't necessarily expecting one locally.

"The weather is still favourable for drivers to get their nice cars out onto the roads, so we could see it and we're just trying to prevent it," Bydeley said. "Responsible, respectful, and lawful visitors are always welcome in Lambton County. However, those looking to attend and jeopardize the safety of others in the community with dangerous and illegal actions should stay home."

Lambton OPP is encouraging anyone who sees suspicious or illegal activity, or drivers showing disregard for local traffic laws, to call them at 1-888-310-1122 or *OPP (677) on your mobile phone.
