Demand in childcare prompts additional career fairs

The need for childcare workers is expected to continue to grow, creating a strong demand across Lambton County.

Licensed childcare providers are looking to fill full and part-time positions, including early childhood educators, assistants and support staff. As a result, multiple career fairs will be held throughout the county during the first two weeks of October.

North Lambton Childcare Centre Executive Director Claire Giles said the demand within the industry has been a long time coming.

"Not only are we looking at the current workforce shortage but we're also looking at the next few years," said Giles. "With the Canada-wide early learning program, we are going to see growth in the industry."

The provincial and federal governments are planning to create 86,000 new childcare spaces in Ontario over the next five years.

Matt Joosse, project manager for the Early Years' Workforce Development Strategy for the County of Lambton, said now is the time for people exploring new career options but it's also an opportunity for those with past experience.

"We're just looking to find people who are motivated and interested in working with children," said Joosse. "If you're somebody that's looking to get back into the workforce, this is a great opportunity."

A career fair for childcare providers was held in Point Edward less than six months ago. Giles said although the event was well-attended there is a need in other parts of the county as well.

"It's just a way to expand and try to meet the demand," said Giles.

The upcoming career fairs are drop-in and do not require pre-registration. Rural centres and home-based childcare providers will be on site to answer questions and share details about possible training opportunities.

For those unable to attend the events, online application information can be found online.
