'The bowling gods were with me that week', Schofield

A retired Sarnia police officer won five gold medals in bowling after being inducted into the World Police and Fire Games Hall of Fame.

Kevin Schofield participated in the multi-sport event in Rotterdam, Netherlands over the summer.

The 74-year-old told Sarnia News Today he's been participating in the games since 2001.

"It's competing against active and retired firefighters, police officers, corrections and border security officers," said Schofield. "There's [approximately] 60 sports that everybody competes in, but I compete in ten pin bowling."

Schofield won in singles, doubles, team events, all events and the stepladder final.

"It was just a fantastic time. The bowling gods were with me that week. It's the type of tournament that every athlete dreams of having. The hall of fame presentation was on Friday night and I didn't bowl until Thursday. I don't think I slept between then. I was so worried about bowling bad in the tournament, after being inducted into the hall of fame, I just put a ton of pressure on myself. Thankfully everything worked out for me."

Schofield said the five medals will join the other hardware he's collected over the past 20 years at the games.

"I've got 16 gold medals, seven silver medals and five bronze. I've given a few of them away to the kids and the grandkids and the rest are in a box," Schofield said with a laugh.

He said the tournament was scheduled to take place in 2021, but was postponed to this year because of the pandemic.

The next games will be held in Winnipeg in 2023, and Schofield plans to be there.

"We've started to make plans already for Winnipeg and hopefully we'll have some of the family out there as well," Schofield said. "I'm looking forward to it. It should be a great time."
