Road construction resumes in Grand Bend

Road construction in Grand Bend has ramped up again, after pausing for the summer.

Lambton Shores Mayor Bill Weber said crews returned to the area following the Labour Day long weekend.

"The construction north of the bridge in Grand Bend is continuing with more sidewalk work and extending the sewer line," said Weber. "There is still some digging to do with that, so they're continuing on."

Weber said motorists visiting the Lake Huron resort community should expect some traffic disruptions again.

"We knew that it would be very challenging to continue with the construction over the summer months with all of the vacationers coming to the community. So, we've got nice weather now for the next few months and they'll get a lot of it finished up, north of the bridge."

Weber said the widening of the Ontario Street Bridge, which was expected to start this month, is being postponed to the new year.

"The bridge construction will be another disruption for a couple of years. I believe that the disruption will stop through the summer months for the tourist season."

Weber said delays were experienced when purchasing land needed for the two-year bridge project.

The new bridge will include an additional traffic lane to help with traffic flow.

In 2021, the province announced $4.8 million in funding for the bridge project.
