Sting sign pair ahead of OHL hockey season

The Sarnia Sting have added a pair of players to the team ahead of the upcoming Ontario Hockey League season.

On Thursday, the club announced the signings of 18-year-old forward Tyson Doucette, and 17-year-old goalie Nick Surzycia to standard player agreements.

Doucette, a 5' 9" native of Sault Ste. Marie, spent the 2021-22 season split between the Soo Thunderbirds in the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League (NOJHL) and the Aurora Tigers of the Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL).

The strong skating forward tallied 15 goals and 12 assists through 23 games played with the Thunderbirds in addition to seven goals and seven assists after 24 games played with the Tigers.

Sting General Manager Dylan Seca said Doucette was a very pleasant surprise during this year's training camp.

"He’s a great skater and can read the ice well," said Seca. "We like his work ethic and character, which fall directly in line with our core values in Sarnia. We’d like to welcome Tyson and the Doucette family to the Sarnia Sting."

Surzycia backstopped the Georgina Ice of the Provincial Junior Hockey League (PJHL) to six wins last season. Through 22 games with the club, the Toronto, Ontario native recorded a .935 save percentage and a goals-against average of 3.08.

"Nicholas is a competitive kid, he had a great season in Georgina Jr. C, and has worked incredibly hard with our goalie coach Franky Palazzese over the last year," said Seca. "This determination and work ethic is something we value. We’d like to welcome Nick and the Surzycia family to the Sarnia Sting."

The Sarnia Sting kick off the 2022-23 preseason with a home-and-home battle with the London Knights this weekend. Saturday night’s game is at 7:05 p.m. at Progressive Auto Sales Arena.
