Sarnia's new police chief appealing for public input

Sarnia's new police chief has been settling into his new role, and getting a feel for the area.

Chief Derek Davis was sworn in on June 1, following the retirement of Norm Hansen.

He said it has been a very busy three months.

"I have had a very steep learning curve here in Sarnia, it's a very unique community, everyone has been very welcoming and I appreciate all the feedback I've heard so far," said Davis. "As far as what I see as priorities, I do see similar challenges faced here that are in other communities and I don't think it's a mystery to everyone that drug addiction, homelessness and mental health are at the top of, certainly our list, as well as other chiefs across Ontario."

Davis said he is very impressed with the service's MHEART program, (Mental Health Engagement and Response Team) which allows for a crisis nurse to accompany officers on calls involving mental health dilemmas.

"I think it's a great program," he said. "I know it started before my arrival and I think it's an excellent undertaking. If I could have my way, I think that's a great program that should be expanded if we could. I think it's an excellent way to provide people with the help they need, right in the field."

Davis said they're reaching out to the public to share what they want to see at the top of the list for the Sarnia Police Service, as they develop their business plan for the next three years. Representatives from local businesses, organizations and community groups are also encouraged to attend.

"There will be several opportunities for people to come see us at open town halls at different spots around the city, to share what they're experiencing as residents and what they think our priorities should be as a police organization," he said.

The police service is holding four community consultation sessions in September. The first will take place at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church Hall on Christina Street on Thursday, September 8 at 9 p.m.

You're asked to RSVP with the date you will be attending by e-mail to businessplan@police.sarnia.on.ca or by calling 519-346-4654.
