First time school bus riders invited to orientation day

Young students who will be riding the school bus for the first time this fall are invited to a special orientation session being held this weekend in Sarnia.

The Lambton Kent and St. Clair Catholic District School Boards are once again offering their “First Time Rider Orientation Day" for those in grades JK to one.

Chatham-Kent Lambton Administrative School Services (CLASS) General Manager Kent Orr said riding the bus can be intimidating at first, adding safety is the top priority.

"We give a safety video that covers off some important key safety messages on how to ride the bus safely," said Orr. "We actually take them out in the school bus and do a little tour and some safety messaging on how to board and de-board the bus."

Orr said the kids will also be taught how to safely cross the street and how to evacuate the bus in case of an emergency.

The free event is being held at Great Lakes Secondary School on Saturday, August 20 from 9 a.m. until noon.

The sessions run continuously throughout the morning, and will take about 30 minutes each.

A similar event is taking place at Ursuline College in Chatham.
