Col. Hadfield to visit Sarnia for special fly-in event

Aviation enthusiasts are invited to a special event taking place at Sarnia's Chris Hadfield Airport, featuring the famous local astronaut.

Dozens of aircraft will be making their way to the airport for a fly-in event, in collaboration with the Canadian Owners and Pilots Association (COPA) Flight 7 Sarnia.

Col. Chris Hadfield will be on hand, mingling with the crowd.

"As someone who started in Sarnia and has had the chance to fly really high, it's just lovely to get together and see where aviation began," said Hadfield. "And it's not just me from my family that's going to be there. The very first flight instructor when Sarnia Airport was brand new was my dad, Roger Hadfield. He's 88-years-old now but he's still flying two airplanes, and he'll be there with his old bi-plane. My mom will be there as well, and I think some of my brothers and sisters will be there."

Hadfield said he will be signing copies of all four of his books, in collaboration with The Book Keeper.

"I've written a children's book that's all around the world and was a best seller, and a couple of other New York Times best sellers. Recently, I wrote my very first thriller/fiction called The Apollo Murders. It's up for a couple of international awards and is being made into an eight part television series."

Many of the planes will be arriving on Friday, August 12, but the main event is being held from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 13.

Visiting aircraft include: P51, Harvards, Chipmunks, Stearmans, Grummans, New Diamond Aircraft DA50 & DA62, plus assorted factory and homebuilt aircraft.
