'Ghost gun' seized in Niagara Cres. search

An unmarked firearm, known as a "ghost gun," was seized after a warrant was carried out to search a residence on Niagara Crescent Friday night.

Sarnia police received a call about unwanted people in the residence just before 9:30 p.m.

When officers arrived, the complainant alleged to have been threatened by suspects who were in possession of a firearm.

A male and female accused were in the residence and exited without incident and taken into custody.

Police allege the male was found in possession of crack cocaine and a flick knife, which is a prohibited weapon.

A third individual, under the age of 18, initially refused to exit the home, but made his way out and was taken into custody without incident when the emergency response team was called.

During a search of the home, officers discovered the "ghost gun" manufactured using a 3D printer and machine shops.

Police said these types of weapons -- which are not traceable because they aren't legitimately manufactured and don't have a serial number -- are assembled and used in crimes to instill fear or physically harm others, similar to the use of a commercial firearm.

A 39-year-old man and 21-year-old woman, both of Sarnia, and a young offender from Oshawa face charges including unauthorized possession of a firearm.

They were held in custody pending a bail hearing.

Sarnia police Cst. John Sottosanti said this is the second "ghost gun" that has been located in the city in the past month, and these types of guns are a growing concern across Canada.

He said a loaded gun found on the sidewalk in the area of Capel and Exmouth Streets in July was manufactured in a similar way.

Anyone with information on these types of guns, or other illegal guns, is asked to call city police at 519-344-8861 extension 0, or Sarnia-Lambton Crime Stoppers at 1-888-222-8477.
