Captain Kidd Days on in Corunna

Captain Kidd Days returns to its pre-pandemic glory with a full slate of events planned in Corunna this weekend.

The 37th annual event kicked off with an outdoor movie Thursday, and continues Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Chairman Geoff Dale said it's nice to be back.

"In 2020, we ran virtual, and last year we did a very scaled down version at one of the local restaurants, so we were able to run, but we are very, very, happy to be back to a normal event basically," said Dale. "Everything we had in 2019 we have again, and more!"

Dale said Captain Kidd will arrive by boat at Ferry Dock Hill Friday at 6 p.m.

"Our best dressed pirate and ambassador contest kick off, we have the ball tournament all weekend and Friday night we have three bands playing, Jacklyn Wills, Full Disclosure and Rumblefish."

Dale says the parade starts at 11 a.m. Saturday.

"We always get asked what the route is. On our Facebook page, there's a map of it on our main poster. Basically, it starts at Thompson Gardens (off Beckwith Street), goes down River Road to Fane (Street), then over to the park."

Dale said a kid zone will be set up at Corunna Athletic Park, which will be opened for the day at noon by members of Aamjiwnaang First Nation doing an Indigenous dance.

"We took our whole budget and put it into Saturday. So our kids zone is pretty much double the size, and then we have a couple of entertainers on Saturday as well. We have Saidat and Rebound Rocks! is going to do a set as well."

Dale said there will be a ball hockey tournament, volleyball tournament and baseball tournament continuing on Saturday.

"On Saturday night, we move to two bands. We have Upside of Maybe and See Spot Run playing and Sunday morning, we're doing a car show which we've never done before. We're expecting a couple hundred cars at the park."

Funds raised from the event previously were directed to the construction of a new skatepark in the community and a grand opening for the attraction will be held Sunday at 11 a.m.

Captain Kidd Days wrap up Sunday night with a fireworks display at 10 p.m.
