Area farmers support helipad construction

The Bluewater Health Foundation has now raised over half of the funds needed for construction of the hospital's new helipad.

The Lambton and Ontario Federations of Agriculture are the latest to contribute to the fundraising campaign, donating $5,000.

LFO President Gary Martin was surprised to learn the Sarnia hospital didn't already have a helipad.

"I'm from the south end of the county, so I go to Wallaceburg for my hospital because it's closer, and they've had a helipad there for years," said Martin. "I was really surprised there's no helipad here. I said, 'what do they use?,' (they said) 'oh, the airport.' Goodness, gracious, the traffic between here and the airport."

Martin said helping farmers was top of mind.

"If you think about a farm accident, if you lose a limb or something drastic like that, 20 minutes makes a big difference."

Bluewater Health Foundation Executive Director Kathy Alexander was thankful for the support.

"The two (organizations) have come together to make this very generous donation to the helipad project," said Alexander. "We're really excited. It's a great opportunity for them to recognize the value of this asset for our community, especially when It comes to the need for quick access to critical care."

Alexander encourages anyone who is able to give, to consider making a donation online at bwhf.ca.

"This donation puts us over the 60 per cent mark with respect to our campaign. We've had some tremendous donations come in and a very generous response from the community and of course the County of Lambton who allocated $400,000 to the project."

The project is estimated to cost $912,000.

Alexander said anyone wanting more information about the helipad can call the foundation office at 519 - 464-4408.

Construction of the helipad started in May.
