Pride parade in Sarnia planned for next year

Sarnia-Lambton PrideFest organizers are looking ahead to hosting another multi-day event with plans of adding a parade to next year's festivities.

The first three-day Pride festival held in Sarnia took place last weekend.

Diversity Ed Co-Founder and Executive Director Crystal Fach said throughout the weekend, approximately 500 people attended the event.

"It was magical! There were so many community folks out supporting," said Fach. "Our BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of color) night was probably the highlight of my whole weekend. Just being able to see representation, even from my own community of Indigenous folks and people of colour and black people celebrated, even on stage... it was fantastic."

They said a lot of allies attended the event and it was nice to see people from the 2SLGBTQAI+ community.

"A lot of people around the world don't get to have the privilege that we do in Canada to just exist as who we are and so it was nice to share that space as a community."

Fach said overall, it was a lot of fun so another PrideFest "will definitely" be held next year. They said the event will likely keep the same format and start with a BIPOC show on opening night.

For the most part, Fach said there were only a few hiccups that likely went unnoticed by attendees.

"I think with your first festival there's always a learning curve but for the most part, they were just quiet hiccups," they said. "The festival itself ran so amazing. I will say this a million times -- and I did on the weekend -- we had the best volunteers who made every single moment of that festival seamless."

Fach said there were over 90 volunteers.
