Downtown Sarnia welcomes back First Friday, Weekend Walkabout

A reinvented Weekend Walkabout will kick off on July 8 with First Friday.

A group of downtown business owners, in partnership with the Sarnia-Lambton Chamber of Commerce, presented the revamped summer event to council in June.

Chamber CEO Carrie McEachran said everyone is in "celebration mode" and ready to get back out into the community. She also said local business owners are ready to welcome more people to the downtown core with venues expected to stay open longer.

"Really this is the business community downtown that has come together and really wanting to bring people downtown, and just give back to the community that's been giving to them over the past couple of years."

First Friday, Walkabout Saturdays, and Car Show Sundays will take place over three weekends this summer. During this time, Christina Street will be closed between George Street and Davis Street from Friday evening until 6 p.m. Sunday.

The Dog Days of Summer will be held on Saturday, July 9, where pet owners are encouraged to bring their "fur babies" downtown. McEachran said a kids zone will also be set up. The Saturday Walkabout will be held from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and will also feature live music.

On Sunday, McEachran said the Sarnia Street Cruisers will showcase their vehicles.

"My understanding is that there are close to 100 or maybe more cars that will be downtown," she said.

As for the following weekends, a Local Market and Art Walk are scheduled to take place on August 6 and a food festival is penciled in for September 3.

The title sponsor for the summer event is Origin Materials.
