Toll booths stop taking Blue Water Bridge tokens

Tokens will no longer be accepted at the Blue Water Bridge as of July 1.

The Federal Bridge Corporation Limited (FBCL) launched the ongoing token redemption program late last year in order to collect tokens that were still in circulation.

Senior Communications Specialist Rémi Francoeur said there are currently about 150,000 tokens in circulation.

There were about 165,000 tokens left in circulation when the redemption program started and about 10,000 have been redeemed.

"FBCL actually discontinued the sale of the Blue Water Bridge tokens on April 1, 2016, and we have continued to honour their usage since. Modest quantities of tokens remain in circulation and continue to be used in reduced frequency," he said.

Francoeur said the sale of Blue Water Bridge tokens has gone on for "20 plus years" and was sold at a discounted rate in comparison to the cash toll rate. There were 550,000 total tokens in the program.

"The change is being made because we're moving to more preferred contactless transactions," said Francoeur.

Although cash will still be accepted at toll booths, Francoeur said the preferred payment option is through the FBCL's prepaid toll program, ConneXion.

After July 1, token holders will be able to redeem them at the Blue Water Bridge Corporate Centre, Exchange House, or Duty Free Store until December 31, at which time the redemption program will end.
