Heat warning posted for Sarnia-Lambton

Environment Canada is forecasting a two day heat event for Sarnia-Lambton.

The agency has posted a heat warning for Tuesday and Wednesday and said temperatures will reach the low to possibly mid 30s (Celsius) during the day and low 20s at night, providing little relief from the heat.

Environment Canada Warning Preparedness Meteorologist Geoff Coulson said while cooler air is expected to arrive by Thursday, it may heat up again over the weekend.

"There is a possibility of again building heat and humidity as we head into the weekend and beyond," Coulson said. "There's a lot of variability in the weather over the coming days and certainly with that heat and humidity, especially Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday evening, we could also see some localized thunderstorms."

The hot and humid air may bring deteriorating air quality and can result in the Air Quality Health Index approaching the high risk category.

The risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors.

The public is asked to never leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle.

It's also advised that the public eat cool, light meals when it's hot and that outdoor workers take regularly scheduled breaks in a cool place.

In high temperatures and humidity, your body may not be able to cool properly which can lead to heat exhaustion or even heat stroke.

Lambton Public Health released some tips last week to help get through the heat.

Due to COVID-19, cooling centers are limited. For a list of air-conditioned locations available for the public seeking relief from the heat, click here.

Heat warnings are issued when two or more consecutive days of daytime maximum temperatures are expected to reach 31 Celsius or warmer and nighttime minimum temperatures are expected to sit at 20 Celsius or warmer or when two or more consecutive days of humidex values are expected to reach 40 Celsius or higher.
