Rotary Club supports celebrated local Ukrainian artist

Sarnia-Lambton residents have the chance to support a celebrated local Ukrainian artist, while helping the war torn country at the same time.

The Rotary Club of Sarnia is selling authorized reproductions of Natasha Nikolenko's work to help her and other Ukrainians in need.

Nikolenko, who recently relocated to Sarnia, was born without the use of her arms and legs and uses her mouth to paint.

Rotary spokesman Michael John Kooy said Nikolenko's work is truly remarkable.

"These are stylized flowers and natural forms done in traditional colours," said Kooy. "They're hues of blue and yellow, obviously the Ukrainian colours, but a variety of pallets. They're lovely. These are 11 x 14 prints and some of them are framed. We also have reproductions on a smaller scale for cards."

Kooy said Nikolenko has received a warm welcome to Sarnia.

"It's just been tremendous how the community has embraced Natasha," he said. "It's a very unique story, it's a moving story. She's made a great effort to come to Sarnia and start a new life in Canada. It's wonderful to see the community come around and show support for her and, I think symbolically, through her to the country."

Prints and cards, both framed and unframed, are for sale at the corporate office of Vision Nursing Home at 109 Crawford St, Sarnia, 8 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., until July 16.

Purchases can be made by cash, cheque or e-transfer, and parking is available on Crawford Street.
