Sarnia man pins woman between two vehicles, charged with assault

A Sarnia man accused of pinning a woman between two cars, while attempting to flee the scene of a collision, is facing multiple charges.

City police said at around 2:25 p.m. Saturday, the suspect rear-ended the victim's car at the intersection of Confederation Street and Indian Road, causing significant damage.

When the woman who was struck exited her vehicle to observe the damage, the suspect attempted to flee, struck the victim's side mirror and pinned her between the two vehicles. She was later taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries and has since been released.

Following the collision, other vehicles in the area attempted to stop the suspect from driving away but were unsuccessful. The man continued northbound to the area of Wellington Street and Indian Road, exited his vehicle and fled on foot. Police immediately attended the area and arrested the suspect after a brief foot chase.

Police said Jeffrey Brian Sanders, 36, is charged with criminal negligence and dangerous operation causing bodily harm, failing to stop at an accident resulting in bodily harm, and assault with a weapon.

The suspect was being held for a bail hearing.

Anyone who witnessed or took video of the incident is asked to contact Detective Brian Halfpenny at 519-344-8861, extension 6213.
