Sarnia police seized a replica firearm after responding to a party on George Street early Saturday.
At around 6:30 a.m., police received a complaint about a person in possession of what was believed to be a sawed-off shotgun in the backyard of the residence at George Street near East Street.
Police said due to safety concerns, officers contained the area around the house with help from the Emergency Response Team (ERT).
Several people were taken into custody as they left the residence. Police then called out to the remaining individuals within the residence before entering the house to ensure there was no one else present.
Later that day, police conducted a search of the home and located a replica firearm that did not function. As a result, all those who were taken into custody were released unconditionally except for a 46-year-old male who was wanted on an outstanding warrant.
Police are reminding the public that carrying a firearm around in public view, whether real or not, will raise fear. The service said unfortunately, some of these replica firearms mimic real firearms and from a distance one cannot tell the difference. Police said they will always treat these complaints as serious until proven otherwise.
Those who must transport a replica firearm are reminded to do so in a concealed fashion (i.e. case or gym bag). Police said the device should not be carried openly or in the waistband of pants for it only draws negative attention.
