Boaters urged to stay safe and sober

Lambton OPP are urging caution on the water this long Victoria Day weekend.

Cst. Jamie Bydeley says the marine unit will be out on Lake Huron and St. Clair River, ensuring safe and sober boating practices.

"The same rules apply for impaired boating as they do for driving a vehicle on the roadway," said Bydeley. "You cannot be under the influence of drugs or alcohol while operating a vessel. It will lead to driver's licence suspension, vehicle impoundment and court costs."

He said boaters are reminded to have proper safety equipment on board including flashlights, flares, batteries and lifejackets.

"Definitely 100 per cent everybody on the vessel needs to have a proper-fitting life jacket. We suggest that everybody be wearing it at all times, but it has to be readily accessible to every person on board."

Boaters are also reminded to check the forecast before leaving the dock.
