Advance polls open this week for provincial election

Ontario residents who want to avoid long lineups to vote on June 2 in the general election can instead visit advance voting stations.

Advance polls open on Thursday and will be available until May 28, which is an increase of five days from 2018.

Elections Ontario Manager of Media and Public Engagement Jo Langham said there are many voting options, which are highlighted in voter information cards. Cards should be received by May 20.

"Regardless of whether you're voting on election day or at advanced polls or at your returning office, what you need to bring in terms of ID depends on whether or not you're on the voters list," Langham said. "If you are on the voters list, you only have to bring one piece of ID that shows your name. If you're not on the list, you're going to need one piece of ID that shows both your name and residential address."

Langham said electors are encouraged to visit elections.on.ca to check if they're on the list. Elections Ontario also recently launched an app with candidate and voting information.

Candidates in Sarnia-Lambton include incumbent MPP Bob Bailey of the Progressive Conservative (PC) Party, Mark Russell of the Liberal Party, Dylan Stelpstra of the New Democratic Party (NDP), Mason Bourdeau of the Green Party, Keith Benn of the New Blue Party, Carla Olson of the Populist Party, and Ian Orchard of the Ontario Party.

Meantime, there will also be seven names on the ballot for the riding of Lambton-Kent-Middlesex. Candidates include incumbent MPP Monte McNaughton of the PC Party, Bruce Baker of the Liberal Party, Vanessa Benoit of the NDP, Wanda Dickey of the Green Party, David Barnwell of the New Blue Party, Aaron Istvan Vegh of the Ontario Party, and Dean Eve of the None of the Above Direct Democracy Party.

Langham said Election Ontario is looking for people to work at polling stations before and during Election Day. A wide range of paid positions can be viewed through the elections' website.

"People can literally look through the job descriptions and pick something that suits them and the amount of time that they want to work," she said.

The Sarnia-Lambton returning office is located at Lambton Mall. Advance voting locations include the Camlachie Community Centre, the Clearwater Community Centre in Sarnia, the Petrolia YMCA, the Point Edward Optimist Community Centre, the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 447 in Corunna, and the Wilkesport Community Centre.
