SGCC hosting Ontario Senior Men's Golf Championship

The Sarnia Golf and Curling Club (SGCC) will be hosting the Ontario Men's Senior Golf Championship, for the first time since 2008.

The 54-hole event is set to take place July 25 to 27 at the Errol Road facility, with a split-tee start.

It's open to Ontario's best male amateur golfers, aged 55 and older, who have earned entry through qualifying or by exemption.

SGCC Head Golf Professional Jamie Parkinson said 135 golfers will be competing.

"We're thrilled to have this opportunity," said Parkinson. "We're hopeful that the pandemic keeps easing, as it is now. We're just looking forward to putting on a great show here for all of the competitors and welcoming them to the Sarnia-Lambton area. The last time we had the opportunity to hold the event, it was a great event here. One of the biggest things is they all loved the golf course. It's a perfect distance and plays right into creating a fair but tough golf course for the competitors."

Parkinson said Sarnia Golf and Curling Club member Steve Wilcox has already received an exemption and many other local senior men are competing in upcoming qualifiers.

"All of the qualifying registration is now kind of underway," he said. "Many of the qualifying sites are sold out, including locally here at Huron Oaks. We've got a number of local competitors that are going to be battling to earn a spot into the championship event."

The organizing committee is looking for volunteers and sponsors for the event.

Spectators are encouraged and welcome for all three days of competition.

The top finishers will qualify for the Canadian Senior Men’s Amateur Championship to be held at the Red Deer Golf & Country Club, in Red Deer, Alberta from September 6 to 9.
