Race to be St. Clair Township mayor underway

Nomination papers have already been filed by two people vying to become the next mayor of St. Clair Township.

Steve Arnold, who has led the township for the past 16 years, has told Sarnia News Today that he is not seeking re-election this fall.

Ward one councillor Tracy Kingston is finishing off her second term and said she's ready for the challenge.

"It's a good opportunity for me to grow as a person and hopefully bring some new, fresh ideas to the township as well," she said.

Kingston said she has more time to dedicate to the role now that she's retired.

"I am a former business person, we had Kay's Petals and Plants for 45 years. I've been a member of the Optimist Club of Moore for over 30 years as well and I really like to get involved with the community. Talking to people, seeing what people want, and what they're excited about in our township."

Former councillor Jeff Agar has also filed his papers for mayor and said he's been waiting four years to run again.

The Corunna resident was first elected to represent ward one in 2006 and spent 12 years on council, before challenging Arnold for the top spot in 2018.

"Township-wide I've sat on almost every committee there was on council and it's just a great place to live and I want to keep it that way," Agar said.

He said he used to be involved a lot with minor hockey and also served on the Brigden Fair Board at one time.

"I'd like to see the taxes stay the way they are and there's a lot of different ways you can do it. I just have a lot of ideas about recreation, arenas, I've spent a lot of time there."

Two other individuals have filed their nomination papers in the township.

Incumbent Deputy Mayor Steve Miller is seeking another term in the same role and Bill Myers is running for ward two councillor.

Nominations for the October 24, 2022 municipal election are being accepted until August 19.

The St. Clair Township nomination list is updated each time someone submits their paperwork.
