SLEP offers new program to assist international job seekers

The Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership (SLEP) has developed a program to better connect local employers with international graduates, as the demand for jobs skyrockets.

"Bridging Global Talent in Sarnia-Lambton" provides the opportunity to diversify the local workforce by retaining and attracting international talent to support employer's hiring demands.

SLEP Economic Development Officer Cari Meloche said the workforce demand in Lambton County is expected to be more than 20,000 over the 2020 to 2030 period.

"We're looking at pre-employment services, so assisting with things such as resume building, and interview preparation," said Meloche. "We're excited to explore an online employment tool that will allow video resume services as well. This would allow the opportunity for an international graduate to really showcase their skill set in a video format, and an employer could view their experience firsthand in a digital world."

Meloche said they're also looking to offer employer sessions, talent events, and career fairs to assist local businesses.

She said Lambton College has been instrumental in attracting international students to the area.

"From Lambton College we're certainly seeing an increase, and continue to do so, with international students coming into Sarnia-Lambton. We're here to help support the idea of the international graduates staying and calling Sarnia-Lambton their home."

In recent years, thousands have attended the school, and Meloche said they will be critical in filling gaps in the local workforce.

The most in-demand sectors include manufacturing, healthcare, construction, retail, trade, accommodations, food services, and professional services.
